The cat fancy is the organized pursuit of breeding, registering and exhibiting pedigree cats. It began with Harrison Weir's first English cat show at the Crystal Palace in London in July 1871, an event that launched competitive cat exhibition as an organized hobby. Weir went on to found the National Cat Club in 1887, England's first cat registry, and the fancy grew through competing registries before the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy unified them in 1910.
