Pottery made by an individual artist potter, from clay to glaze to firing, rather than by a factory. The movement took its modern shape around Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada's workshop at St Ives and Leach's A Potter's Book, and it made the potter's mark and the maker's hand central to ceramics.
Facts
Origin YearWikipedia's own studio pottery article places the movement's emergence broadly in the early 20th century through several converging influences (art pottery, the Arts and Crafts movement, the Bauhaus, and the rediscovery of Song pottery), naming no single founding year. 1920, the founding of the Leach Pottery, already recorded on this atlas as the movement's own wellspring, is used here as the conventional single-year marker rather than a precise date of origin.
