Architect turned woodworker whose New Hope, Pennsylvania studio made the live edge famous: tables that keep the tree's own contour, knots and butterfly-keyed cracks as the design. Interned with other Japanese Americans during the war, he learned traditional Japanese joinery in the camp and built a practice around honoring, in his phrase, the soul of a tree.
